Unemployment Gap

The birth of our first child was a life-changing experience for me. It was a very difficult birth. I spent a week in the hospital after our daughter was born and took three months to recover. Before our daughter came into our lives, my road seemed pretty clear. Go back to school and get a Ph.D. and continue in higher education. Instead, I took a different road. I cut back on my hours at the University in order to spend more time with our child. After 9/11, the University lost a large amount of funding and laid off all the part-time employees, including me, so I became a stay-at-home mom. We added two more children to our household during this time. While I did not work at a regular job, I still volunteered in our children’s classrooms, helped with school fundraisers and volunteered in our church in addition to running an online bookstore and doing freelance writing.
